The official Dukan Diet website

A workmate told me this morning about an episode of Watchdog that was on last night about the official Dukan Diet website – I can’t emphasise enough how much I agree with Watchdog’s assessment – of the website at least.

Here’s the article

Don’t get me wrong – this diet really works for me. It’s my Goldilocks diet – not too heavy, not too light.

However, in my opinion ( I have to say that for libel reasons!) the official Dukan Diet website is abysmal!!!!Β I actually signed up last year, paid a ridiculous amount of money and was really disappointed. Longtime readers may remember that I ended up writing to the website administrators, offering my services as web-professional who also speaks OK French, to do some translation services for them.

To their credit, they did kinda take me up on the offer. They refunded my subscription fee, and I did a bit of translation for them. I went through a whole section on their FAQs, cleaning it up. But they never published it. Trust me, what I wrote was better than what they have there now.

I also told them to do other TINY things that would make a big difference, like changing the stupid buttons that say things like “I enter my weight” to say something more idiomatically correct in English, like “submit weight”. They never did.

Their “personalised” feedback was just form responses. Dr Dukan hardly ever came in to chat in the live chats. I went from being fairly motived, to being so disgusted with the whole thing that I was actually DE-motivated.

I ended up giving up on not only on attempting to help them change things, but also giving up on the website and to a certain extent, the diet. I remember how motivated I felt back in August last year, doing my daily walk and day-dreaming during the walk about becoming one of the website’s VIDs (ie Very Important Dieters/Dukaners.) When it became apparent that if I were to become a VID, I’d only be feeding the money-grubbing beast, I kinda lost my way.

However, I still stand behind the diet. But if you want to follow the Dukan Path, best to go out and buy the book, or read the blogs of any of the people you see in the blogroll. Don’t take anything we eat as gospel (for example, I eat bacon and pork regularly, though the UK version of the book prohibits it). Read the book, use that as your starting point, and go from there.

AND DON’T FORGET TO EXERCISE!Β

If there’s one bit of advice that I’d emphasise from the books, it’s to EXERCISE!! πŸ™‚

  1. At least he responds fairly sensibly. Annoying that you did all that work and they didnt use it though! I have to say Ive hardly been on it but I did dream of being a VID someday. Is that only open to those who pay for coaching cos BeatleKitten says she didnt…

    • Meh, he responded via his spin-doctors, like a politician. And then went and quoted statistics.

He goes on to say that less than 2% of customers ask for a refund – that’s because it’s pretty clear in the terms and conditions that you’re not going to get a refund under any circumstances.

      It’s pretty rubbish…

The worst part is that the area infront of the pay-wall (ie the bit that you don’t have to be signed in to see) is actually not bad. It lulls you into a false sense of security, makes you think that the rest of the website behind the paywall will be equally as good.

  2. I also love this Diet – I am doing great on it – but the websites in all languages I have consulted (and I speak fluent English, Italian, German as well as some French) are ridiculous.
Another thing that drives me nuts is that the books for all the different languages give different stories of the diet – and obviously the online help you pay for gives yet another story entirely!
So I bought the book (in Italian) and am sticking to what it says in there. For questions I ask others doing the Diet online (although the official Dukan website in countries such as Germany bars even the Forum if you don’t pay their ridiculously high fee – no, no chatting with others doing the diet!).
And if 2% milk is allowed in one country and not in the other … and the website experts say one thing … oh well, I’ll just have to figure out whether I want to “live on the edge” and risk some!
But quite honestly, in my opinion the website discredits the validity of this diet! I don’t think I would have gone on it, had I seen it before reading the book and starting it …

      YES! I quite agree.

  3. I’d be very frustrated, too! I bought the book and follow the good blogs (like yours!). How frustrating that you offered to help them and they didn’t use what you put together.
Hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Thanks for sharing…we’re glad we didn’t waste money on the site. We’re doing what you’ve been doing, reading other Dukan Diary blogs and it’s really inspiring. We love the diet for the healthy lifestyle change it promotes.

    • Hiya!

Yeah, the blogging community’s pretty awesome, isn’t it? πŸ™‚

Let me reiterate though – the book is an excellent buy. It really made things snap into place for me when I was first starting out last year…

I watched it by chance, I walked in as the girl presenter was doing her bit about what she was eating and that got my attention that she was talking Dukan….how did the girl only lose 4lbs in like 10 days if she was following it? Any way.
I haven’t really looked at the website other than to get my true weight. When I saw the price I didn’t look any further. Didn’t realise you had so much contact with, what sounds like in my opinion, a really badly run website.
Blogs like yours have more info and are more inspirational.

    • Hehe… well, it depends on how much she had to lose – if she was just 10lbs from where she wanted to be, then 4lbs in 10 days is pretty respectable!! I’ve known people on this diet who’ve had more than 150lbs to lose, and they shed pounds like crazy to begin with. It’s all relative. πŸ™‚

  6. I paid for the website last Sunday, emailed Thursday to cancel, and today printed the same email off and sent of as registered post. I’m hoping to see the money come back, it just wasn’t as I expected.

I had thought I needed the website to keep my motivation, but I think by following people on twitter and reading blogs like this one I’m going to do so much better.

    Great blog by the way!

    • Hi Anna!

Yes, the “must cancel by postal mail” really annoyed me – you basically have 3 days to evaluate the website, and then have to get the letter in the mail so that it reaches paris by the end of the 7 days. That whole thing was totally screwed up. I hope you get your money back!! πŸ™‚

      Keep in touch, Anna! πŸ™‚
