About me

Greetings! I’m Charlotte, and this blog is all about my journey towards a healthier weight using the Dukan Diet.

I’ve been trying to get rid of excess pounds for years now – with varying degrees of success, but each time, the effort expended outstrips the reward received.  Finally with the Dukan Diet, I’m finding that dieting doesn’t have to be all pain for little gain (or loss, in my case.)

I started this journey at the beginning of June 2010, weighing 112.3kg – that’s 247lbs, for them’s as prefer it. By about October 2010, I was down to about 88kgs. Then the double whammy of Christmas and cold/dark weather hit, and I totally fell off the diet. My weight soared up to almost 100kg again over the course of 6 months. I wasn’t even following a consolidation diet – what could I expect?!

I’ve been working hard to re-gain my commitment and progress.

My goal is to get down to 75kg – 165lbs.  That’s a total loss of of around 37kgs, or 83lbs, from my original starting weight.  Seems like a lot – but I’m getting there. I have up days, I have bad days, and everything inbetween days.  My goal is to share all the ups and downs…

UPDATE (August 2011) As at August 2011, I have restarted Dukan in earnest.  My goal is not to look at where I’ve been, but to focus on where I’m going.  I also reset my starting weight – it’s demoralising to see the progress spreadsheet with the big bounce back up again since November 2010. I want to see the same kind of steep loss line as I did in June 2010, hence the restart.

Here’s my progress since my serious re-boot:

Aaand here’s my Year One progress:

The following chart tracks my progress in my first year of the diet.  It’s no longer being updated, but I’ll leave it here to give you an idea of how my progress went.  The blue line is my daily weigh in weight, while the red line is the rolling average of the last 7 days, to help smooth out any spikes.

    Hi there,

I wondered if you could help, I lost all the weight I needed to on the dukan and so far have not put it back on now that I’m eating normally! But I wondered as I love my oat bran can I have more than 3 tablespoons on the stabilization phase?

    Much love x

    • Hi Catherine,

Well done on all your progress – you’re up to stabilization! I’ve still got a loooong way to go before I get there.

To be honest, I’m not sure I can answer your question about oatbran – if it were me, I’d be sticking to what Dukan says in his book, to the letter. But you’re a lot further along than I am. Maybe you can try asking your question again at the Dukan Diet Forum? The link is in the sidebar of my blog. 🙂

      Good luck!

    Hi Charlotte,
congrats on your weight loss! I’m starting with the diet today but am still waiting for the book (was due yesterday).
Have you signed up for the Dukan Diet website? Do you know if it is worthwhile? I mean, it is quite expensive…but if it really keeps me going on the diet I might consider.

    Thanks a lot,
    Gwen

    • Hi Gwen,

Hey, congtrats on starting the diet, I’m sure you won’t be disappointed!

I’ve not signed up for the Dukan website – the amount it costs depends on how much you’ve got to lose, and I just can’t afford almost £200 upfront. It’s a silly pricing/payment system if you ask me, but I’m told by the website staff that that’s all due to change. Probably not soon enough to suit me – I bet they’ll update the pricing policy as soon as I hit my target weight… 😉

Having said that, I do know people who have signed up for it and find it worthwhile. You get to participate in the live online chats with Pierre Dukan, and get personalised training from the coaching staff. I’ve not needed that yet, my diet’s going fine, but if you find yourself stalling or really can’t find the answers anywhere, then it might be worthwhile for you. The Dukan Forum linked to from my blog is a brilliant resource of people willing and able to help out, share information and offer encouragement and support – maybe try giving that a go before shelling out £££. 🙂

Good luck, and keep in touch!

        Hi Charlotte,
thanks for your kind reply. I really figured the same and decided not to join. It is a lot of money if I convert it to Swiss Franks even more. Finally got the book yesterday and read it in one sitting ;o). I lost 1,7kg on the first day! I am amazed! I know it’s a lot of water but still it feels good. After reading the book, it’s the first time that I really feel I am able to loose those pounds.

Would love to keep in touch!

    Hey Charlotte 🙂

Congrats on your success in losing weight 🙂 I am planning on following the Dukan Diet.

I am reading blogs and all I can about Dukan Diet on the internet and really liked your blog. I wanna ask, I am following Dukan Diet without reading the book. I cant get it from where I live and cant order online for whatever reason. Do u think it will work this way?

I have to lose 30 lbs and I am doing 5 day attack phase and then cruise till I reach my goal weight calculated for free by Dukan website.

I also wanna ask how long did it take for you to lose 30 lbs? And what is your height and age? Just wanna compare with mine.

    Thanks 🙂

    • Hi San,

That’s a real shame that you can’t find the Dukan book – it makes a HUGE difference! Amazon should ship internationally – they once shipped to me when I was in remote north west China. Have you checked Amazon already?

It took me about 10 weeks to hit 30lbs lost – but I am by no means slender yet! I still have a long way to go, and my goal is to lose 82lbs in total, to get to my ideal weight of 165lbs. I’m about 1.63m tall, so I still won’t be slender – but I’ll be a lot slenderer than I was before, and much healthier! Scroll down my blog page a little ways to the post, “progress in photos.” There, you can see that the diet has definitely made a difference to my face shape – and I can tell you, it certainly has made a difference to my body shape, because none of my jeans fit me anymore!!

Good luck with your diet, San!

Who is going to have to modify that graph to put in a something below 95kg?! (maybe it is automatic … robbing you of the satisfaction of having to do it manually)

    So impressed!!!!!!!!!

    Reply

    • Hehe – it does indeed self-modify to get itself below 95. It’s actually a really cool thing to do – as soon as I enter something below 95, the whole graph just shifts automatically! Love it! 🙂

    Hi Charlotte,
I’ve been a lurker on your blog for quite a while and thought it was time to actually post a comment.
First of all, congratulations on your weight loss and great blog.
I am also on the Dukan Diet although I haven’t read the book and am following it rather freely, just from reading articles on it on the net, going on the official site and reading blogs by people like you.
I started in April and should have lost the 12 kg I was aiming to lose in July. I lost 8 kg quite easily but the summer holidays, with visitors and dining out, etc. have stalled the weight loss.
Now I am trying to get back on track.
Thanks to you and your blogroll friends for providing me with added motivation.

    Hi Charlotte,

I just recently found your blog and I find it very inpiring.
Congratulations for the sucess you had so far!
I have two questions that I wanted you to ask:

-first, which rythm of PP and PV days do you follow? At first it seemed to be one day, but did you change the rythm after time? What do you find the most effective?
-second, how and how long do you microwave the eggs? I tried it yesterday, but it did not work out that well…:)

    All the best,
    Maria

    Reply

    • Hi Maria! Thanks for stopping by, and for the lovely comments

      To answer your questions:

      1) I did start out on a 1:1 rhythm. Then I decided to go to a 2:2 rhythm, to better make use of leftovers. Since I started that, things have been a bit more fluid – sometimes I do three PPs in a row if I’ve been bad, or three PVs in a row if that’s the way my social calendar works out, but it mostly evens out in the end. Dukan says that in the long run, it doesn’t matter what rhythm you go for, so long as you get the same amount of PP vs. PV days. Technically I should be more regimented in how I do things, but we’re going into the Christmas silly season, which makes things really hard. Post Christmas I plan to be much more structured in how I do things, until I reach my target weight.

      2) Eggs. Eggs are a toughie – it depends on your microwave. We have an 800w microwave, and I generally cook two eggs in a coffee cup for 20 secs or so, then take it out, swirl it around and put it back, and then I repeat this multiple times. Once the eggs are white around the edges with maybe a 2cm diameter of uncooked white in the middle, I get out the teaspoon and give it all a good stir. Then I add salt and pepper, and stir again. My eggs are now usually cooked enough that they’ll keep cooking for a bit in the mug – I like mine ever so slightly sloppy.

Eggs are VERY easy to overcook in my book. Also, listen carefully to the eggs as they’re cooking – they might make small popping sounds, which is sometimes the precursor to a HUGE eggy explosion! Save yourself a clean up effort, and check the eggs regularly as they cook! 😉

Let me know how you go, Maria! 🙂

        Hi Charlotte,

thanks for your feedback! Yes, I had some trouble with the eggs and the microwave, but I am for sure going to try your description. Microwave eggs is easy and convenient and I usually don’t have that much time in the morning, so definitely a quick breakfast. Dont’ know why I never thought about that?

I have the same problem, since I am a stundent and I have a lot of social events going on, it’s very hard to organize the PV and PP days. PV is usually fine, also with eating out, but for PP you really have to plan in advance. I am still trying to figure out what a good rythm would be (or just adjust it to my weekly schedule maybe?).

        all the best,
        Maria

      • Hi Maria,

something else that I find really convenient for breakfast is cooking oatbran porridge in advance – usually in three day batches. I just divide them over three tupperware containers, and then nuke one in the microwave in the morning.

I’m getting pretty good at putting my makeup on in the kitchen while my food for the day is cooking – I hate chicken fajita pieces which were cooked the night before, so I always cook mine in the morning.

In terms of PP/PV rhythm, one of my Dukan friends do a 4:3 rhythm – ie 4 PP during the week, and then on Friday, Saturday & Sunday, do 3 PVs. It means that they’re coming out slightly heavy on the PP, but the friend I have who’s doing that looks AMAZING! (You do, Jo!)

Good luck with the eggs! 🙂

    Hiya Charlotte,
Just finished with the Attack Phase, did 4 days since I want to lose about 17/18 pounds,( and lost 4Ibs). I know that doesn’t seem much to lose, but I’m 51 years old and menapausal. It is also my ideal weight lose target. One of the main problems I have right now is the Oat bran, I live in Nigeria (africa) and it so hard to get, is there any substitute for it?
And thanks for this blog it really encouraging. I got to know about the diet from my sister who lives in the UK she has managed to shift 7kg in 8weeks which is great.
I had started the diet a few months back but I gave up after two weeks because you need to plan for this diet. I”m on it again, with a stuctured cooking and eating plan and I guess it all good now.

  11. Hej Charlotte
We see from your comment (https://charlottesdukandiet.wordpress.com/2010/11/30/848/#comment-692) that you are going to take our advice (https://charlottesdukandiet.wordpress.com/2010/11/24/cruise-day-162-pp/#comment-643) to consolidate for a while and then start the weight loss phase again.

That is probably the right thing, but the thing is, you see, you have built up readers/ followers/ webpals, and you have inspired many to take up this regime. You canny just stop blogging just because you stopped dieting!

This is the real world, you have a real life, and this might just seem virtual, but it probably has more affect than so-called reality! Your fans and followers need their fix! Warts and all — that’s the reality-part really…

A real person going through what others might too — this blog will prepare them, you have a golden opportunity here that is too good to miss!

Apart from the selfish starved-fans position, we do feel that you have a better chance of reaching your goals if you don’t let the blog slip; the blog will keep you accountable. Eventually.

We are really, really worried that you will be too embarrassed or sheepish to post updates — at least the spreadsheet. But don’t think like that, because soon enough your wonderfully crafted blog will atrophy, your fan-base will wither and even Google will give up on you… oh, the humanity!

Come on, don’t let the blues get to you, don’t undo all the hard work you have invested. Please pretty please? Chart the ups and downs, but keep something ticking over.

Hey we’ll buy the book when it comes out!
    Love

      • You ARE there! Brilliant! We just missed you, y’know; it’s been half a year at least, so we’ve been having withdrawals lately! LOL.

Now, you have to realise that it’s winter, cold, dark, SAD, no exercise due to ice and snaw, supermarkets empty, posties overloaded with cards, so forget internet oat bran deliveries.

Times are HARD dammit. And then there are invitations, office parties, mince pies, mulled wine, cakes and sweeties.

We have both put on a couple of kilos, but we can imagine what we would have been doing without our Dukan conscience kicking in! LOL. We’ll get it off — and we will because we know how — when things have died down.

In the meantime, we are consolidating, having the odd celebratory mistake, but all the while knowing right from wrong (still doing wrong though). There are trying times.

We reckon that come Christmas, we will have a great time (thanks to Dukan), we won;t want to be undoing all our hard work, but at the same time, we want to feel free and normal or something, you know?

I think we know how to lose weight now, we know what needs to be done, and we will do it — why? because it IS worth it/ we’re worth it.

It’s all about being aware all the time — having the odd handful of nuts, another bit of bread, some wine, whatever. We are mentally still with it — we have not given up, but we know we’re cheating! Silly mind games.

        Ah well.

We are looking forward to our regular fix of Charlotte to keep us on track!#

  17. Hi Charlotte,
Not wells means ups and downs through the night again for us (hence the late hour of this missive). Sorry we haven’t been visiting for a while (too busy, crap ISP blah blah).

Will try to catch up on your posts some evening through next week, but tonight, just time for this and to say that your consolidation is working out just fine by the look of it, pretty flat lined since new year, so well done you.

By the way, we’re finished consolidation now, and have to say that the Dukan did good by us, almost exactly bang-on as per his web predictions for both of us.

We hit the target and have kept it flat lined for well over half a year now.

We are simply not on the diet anymore; on cruise and consolidation to an extent it was all about wanting to be slim more than wanting to eat something.

We no longer think about slimming because we don’t have to, we are cured and think differently about food. Job done.

We hope that when you get back on the cruise you’ll do the final stretch at the same pace as the first part.
    Hugs

Welcome to the world of Dukan! It’s a really good system, if you do it right. I’m just back on it after months and months away, Day 6 now and finally back on veggies again – yay!

You do fantastic baking, if I remember NaNoWriMos of the past correctly. I look forward to reading about your recipes! Have a scan through my fellow Dukan bloggers in my blog list for inspiration – there’s some really good stuff going on out there. 🙂

Also, if you’re looking for desserty stuff, try out the stewed rhubarb – you can have 100g of it per day on a PP day, and unlimited on a PV day. Also, read up about spoon-for-spoon sweeteners (blog post from a few days ago) to help cut the carb levels in your desserts. I’m surprised that Dukan’s not pointed out the evils of spoon-for-spoon…

    Greetings from Cyprus!:)
I am also on the Dukan diet and found your website while looking for recipes as i havent experimented at all, just eating plain lean proteins and totally avoiding carbs since the end of May and it is working for me, but wanted to experiment a bit and thus i found your website. I dont know anyone else from Cyprus doing this Diet but it has worked wonders for me!:) I have lost so far 12Kgs which is amazing considering that i also have Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and it is the first time that a diet actually helped me!:)
I will keep visiting your website and be inspired by you so that i will feel that i have a mate in this trip from now on!:)
Keep it up and all the best!:)

12 kgs since May – nice one! Doing what you’re doing, sticking strictly to the diet, is exactly what I did last year, and I lost a similar amount. Keep it up for as long as you can! 🙂 But at the same time make sure to get your veggies – I know that things like tomatoes have more carbs than you’re willing to eat, given how successful you’ve been, but you need the nutrients! 🙂 You must be just so thrilled with your progress so far!

Keep it up and stay in touch!

    Hi all

So glad I stumbled on your site!

Today is Monday and I started the Attack phase last Tues, I plan to go on to the Cruise phase from tomorrow. I have a lot to lose. My starting weight is 20st 5lb and today i’m at 19st 8lb, so I’m in it for the long haul!

I’ve been fine upto now. I’ve tried other diets may times but they give you too much freedom and I find this more restrictive so it works better for me. I don’t eat red meat so have only eaten chicken for the last week and salmon, lots of eggs, the oat bran and tubs of cottage cheese. This has had the reverse effect of constipation. Surprisingly I’ve not felt the slightest bit hungry but I know I’m soon going to get bored of the limited range of foods I eat. I’m excited to look through your recipes – so the more chicken based ones the better!

Good luck to you all on your journey, mine is going to be a long one….

I am enjoying following your dukan progress on your blog. You have some great recipe ideas. My dukan blog (similar to yours) is private since I teach and don’t want students seeing my private life. You are welcome to follow me when I can work out how to invite you!

    Hey Charlotte

Go you…what a brilliant blog. And your photo is inspirational, you have achieved so much it seems from your before photo and your page photo.

I am just starting today. And am still trying to figure out what Standing means ie one of my exercises for the day is Standing for one hour. Is this distinct from walking? Does it mean stay on your feet for at least one hour or stand in one position for one hour?

    • Hi Una!

Welcome! And well done on taking the first steps – you won’t regret it. You’re exactly right – standing for one hour is just staying on your feet, consciously. I think what Dukan’s trying to say is, “get off the couch!”

Personally, I don’t hold with that, unless it’s for someone who literally only leaves the couch to relieve themselves or get another soda. If you can manage it, actually get out and walk. It doens’t have to be a power walk – it just has to be a little faster than your normal walking speed. What I did when I first started out, was to walk at my normal comfortable walking pace, and then consciously speed that pace up just a notch. When you’re out walking, it’s easy to let your mind wander and slow down again, so I worked out how fast that “a bit faster than comfortable” speed was, in terms of beats per minute. For me, it started out at about 122-125bpm. Then I went out and found a whole lot of songs which matched that speed range (http://www.jog.fm helps) and put them on my iPod. Then all I had to do was just walk in time with the music, and let my mind wander as I walked. These days I’m up closer to 133-135bpm – any faster and I’d be running!

I really enjoy my walking – having the music means that I really don’t have to concentrate too hard on “going fast” and can just daydream or enjoy the scenery as I go. It’s kinda meditative – it helps me refocus on my commitment to lose weight, if that makes sense.

Good luck, Una, and keep in touch! 🙂

Hey Charlotte! What a great blog, ur honesty is much appreciated. Love the humour too! I’m on day three of attack, and haven’t weighed myself yet but I feel thinner! I have a question though, and maybe you or one of ur readers can answer – has anyone with a blood type A had success with the Dukan Diet? According to the blood type diet, type a are better eating vegetables, not a lot of protein.

Anyway thanks for your great Blog, and if anyone can shed some light re Blood Type A it would be much appreciated! 🙂
